HISTORY OF MENASASI

Establishment of Middle East and North Africa Society of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (MENASASI)

 

At the recent ICAO Regional Accident Investigation Organization Workshop on Cooperation in Air Accident Investigation, it was agreed by the representatives present to establish a Middle East and North Africa Chapter of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI).

Recognized in the ICAO Safety Report 2015 is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for significant contributions in improving the coordination of accident and incident investigation activities in the ACAC States. Holding workshops in 2012 and 2013 and attended by representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and UAE, led to the establishment of the Middle East and North Africa Society of Air Safety Investigators (MENASASI), affiliated as a regional chapter of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI). The goal is to promote cooperation and to act proactively in establishing cooperation in air accident investigation across the Middle East and ACAC States

The International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) is a society formed to promote air safety by the exchange of ideas, experience and information about aircraft accident investigations, and to help in the advancement of flight safety.

ISASI promotes technical advancement by providing professional education through lectures, displays and presentations and by the exchange of information for mutual development of improved investigations.

ISASI broadens professional relationships among its members to maintain and increase the prestige, standing and influence of the professional Air Safety Investigator in all matters of air safety. The Society was founded in the United States in August 1964.

With the establishment of the Canadian and Australian Societies’ and over 100 individual members from 35 countries, the international nature of the Society was recognized in 1977, and the name of the Society was changed to The International Society of Air Safety Investigators.

Today, affiliated National and Regional Societies are located in the United States, Europe, Canada, Asia, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and Russia.

ADMINISTRATION

The affairs of the Society are administered by its International Council. The International Council is elected by the membership biennially and is composed of the Society President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Executive Advisor (Immediate Past President) and Councilors representing the affiliated national Societies and International members.

Assisting in the work of the Society are three Standing Committees, six Special Objective Committees, and technical Working Groups to address Aircraft Accident Investigation Policy and Standards, Government Air Safety Investigation, Human Factors, Flight Recorder and Technical Library issues for the Society.

A full-time staff member, who handles communications, inquiries and requests from Members, and mailings to members, among other duties, operates the administrative office of the Society. The offices are located near Washington Dulles Airport.

The inaugural meeting of the Society of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) covering the Middle East and North Africa (MENASASI, took place in Abu Dhabi in May 2013.

There was a large attendance and Eng. Ismaeil Abdel Wahed, the MENASASI Chairman, introduced the distinguished Board members. The Air Accident Investigation Sector of the GCAA has taken a leading role in facilitating the establishment of the regional Society. The Society will play an important part in bringing regional investigators together and in spreading investigation knowledge and details of the latest techniques across the Middle East and North Africa.

Membership is open to active or retired investigators affiliated either with a State or with industry. If you are an investigator in the Middle East or North Africa please consider joining MENASASI. The Society will benefit from your knowledge and, in turn, you will benefit from the experiences of your regional colleagues.
